Story

In the early morning hours of November 13, 1948, suppression forces from the 9th Regiment based in Oedo (외도, an area just west of Jeju City) set off for Wondong Village (원동리). On their way to Wondong Village - which is located in Jeju's mid-mountain region - the 9th Regiment passed through Haga-ri (하가리). Two houses - one family who lived in the eastern area of the village and the house of Jeong Gi-bong who lived in the central area - were active. The Moon family had just completed a 'jesa' (제사, a ceremony to honor a family's deceased relatives) and were eating together. Meanwhile several people had gathered to eat pork and drink at Jeong Gi-bong's house to celebrate the successful hunt of a wild pig.

The suppression forces first got the people who had gathered at Jeong Gi-bong's house. They then went around to the neighboring houses and dragged out whoever they could. Then they set fire to the houses. In total 16 houses were burned down.

The suppression forces then brought the people to a field that was locally known as 'Yuksiuyeong'. There the men were separated from the rest and were executed. Any who survived the shooting were stabbed by bayonet as the soldiers "checked" to see if someone had survived. While the men were killed their families were forced to watch from across the road.
