Torture of Yang Eunha

March 14, 1948, Daejeong-eup

Actors Involved

  • Yang Eunha (양은하) - a 27 year-old man from Yeongrak village (영락리) who died while in police custody

  • Police officers from the Moseulpo (모슬포) police box in Daejeong-eup (대정읍)

Story

On March 16, 1948 the local newspaper the Jeju Sinbo (제주신보) reported a case of a young man dying in police custody at the Moseulpo Police Box (모슬포경찰파출소) a couple days before. This man's name was Yang Eunha (양은하). Yang Eunha had supposedly been arrested for "violating the proclamation".

A man named Kim Sibyeong (김시병), who had also been a prisoner at the Moseulpo police box at the same time as Yang Eunha, testified to the media that the police had tortured them by beating them and using electricity on them. He also stated that there was no reason for the torture other than to amuse the police when they got bored.

Yang Eunha's cousin, Yang Sinha (양신하), would also later testify that when they arrived at the police box they discovered a hole dug in the ground next to the body, implying that the police had intended to try and cover up what had happened to Yang Eunha.

In the end, all six of the police officers at the Moseulpo police box were arrested and later sentenced to prison time with five of them being sentenced to five years and the other officer being sentenced to one year.
