South Korean army - 1st battalion, 2nd regiment
In an attempt to prevent the Jeju people from aiding the armed resistance group, the government launched a ferocious suppression campaign. Around the island multiple locations were set up as 'interrogation' facilities by the army's intelligence divisions. One of those facilities was the agriculture warehouse located in the southern area of Seogwipo (current - Seogwi-dong - 서귀동).
Just down the road from the warehouse is the coast. Currently that location, called Jeongbang waterfall (정방폭포), is a popular tourist attraction. People who were interrogated at the warehouse were often sentenced to be summarily executed (즉결처형) and they would be taken out the back and down to the coast where they would be shot. The name of this spot is 'Sonam Meori' (소남머리) and comes from the many pine trees that grow on the small hill.
It was here that the 2nd regiment of the 1st battalion army intelligence division set up their base camp. The warehouse was used as a place for interrogations as well as a temporary jail. Besides the army intelligence division, the warehouse also served as the base of operations for the main unit of the suppression forces for Seogwipo.
Many of those caught are accused of trying to escape or other crimes were sent to the warehouse in Seogwi-dong. People brought in for interrogation were often first beaten with a club before being stripped naked and tortured. If the crime was deemed bad enough, that person was summarily executed by being taken to Sonam Meori and shot to death.
