December 18, 1948, Pyoseon-myeon
Pyoseon (표선면) and Namwon (남원읍) Residents - Namely from the areas of Gasi-ri (가시리) and Tosan-ri (토산리)
Minbodan (민보단) - A right wing group that also included local residents who were forced to join as a sign of proving that they were not rebels
Suppression Forces (토벌대) - Usually a mix of police, army, and right wing militant groups
For about a week beginning from December 18, 1948, about 200 people from Tosan-ri (토산리) were killed here. This was one of the larger mass executions that happened here, but executions happened regularly. The reason so many were killed here was because the army had set up a base at the district office in Pyoseon (표선면). A mud building had been built in front of the office to serve as a temporary jail. From there people were taken to Hanmosal (한모살) to be executed.
Another horror that happened here was the forced conscription of young Pyoseon men into the local Minbodan (민보단). The army would use the Minbodan to execute the residents. The army would take those to be executed to Hanmosal, and then force the Minbodan to stab them to death with bamboo spears. If a Minbodan member would hesitate the army would threaten them, leaving them no choice but to kill their neighbor.
